Day 4: Grand Canal

A quiet day resting with an outing to the Wanda Centre and excellent coffees. When they do it, the Chinese do it very well, including coffee.

We plan to visit the Great Wall tomorrow but meanwhile having walked over the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal I have to say that that feat of hydraulic engineering, completed in 600 AD, is for me an astonishing achievement. To have built a canal 1104 miles long, with locks, over the 1,000 years from 400 BC to 600 BC, which continues to be used as the major artery of Chinese civil engineering today must rank as one of the greatest achievements of mankind.
