A fairly bright sunny day, looks perfect for beginning to explore the city.
We travelled to the centre of the city on the metro and buses and in bright sunshine walked through the equivalent of Oxford Street, London and then through the Forbidden City. This series of ancient steps towards the centre of the royal palace is somewhat like a Russian doll, each similar but a little different. Vast, highly stylised, hugely impressive and great to see on a bright autumn day. It is all so well maintained that it is hard to grasp how old it is.
